The Old Capitol is a national historic landmark located
on the heart of the University of Iowa's campus. During
the renovations efforts of the Old Capitol, Gessner
Group took extreme care in assuring that all mechanical,
plumbing, electrical and fire protections systems were
concealed so as to preserve the 19th century interior
period décor. Ductwork and slot diffusers are completely
concealed within the architectural design elements.
Electrical receptacles are obscured within wooden baseboards,
accessible via a removable panel. The Old Capitol basement
historical archive utilizes a dry-agent fire suppression
system. Thus, in the event of a fire, fire and water
damage to the documents will be minimal. Specialty lighting
designs were also implemented. Chandeliers and wall
sconces are electrified yet match the details of the
original candle type. Lighting design concepts also
incorporated concealed fixtures to vary lighting levels
as required for anticipated space use.
